The straw (from the Latin palea) is that agricultural product consisting of culmi (the stems of cereals) at the end of the ripening of the plant.
It can be considered as a by-product of agriculture, because it is what remains of the cereals after threshing, once the grain has been harvested. The main so-called "straw" cereals are: soft wheat, durum wheat, barley, oats, rice, millet, rye and spelled.
Normally the straw, if it is collected, is compressed and packed by a special machine called baler into square or round bales (with a diameter ranging from 120 to 200 cm) with a total weight of 3 to 4 quintals each.
It is made up of cellulose, lignin, waxes, minerals and silicates, for this reason it decomposes slowly, but it is still necessary to keep it out of the rain, possibly in a ventilated place, to avoid the development of mold.
Straw accounts for about half the weight of the aerial biomass of a barley, oat, rice, rye or wheat crop.
The use of straw dates back to ancient times, from the construction of ropes to the padding of mattresses (clowns or straw mattresses) as an alternative to wool.
In breeding it is used as an integrative element of forage in ruminant and goat breeding, and, above all, as a litter on the floor in stables: mixed with manure it forms manure.
It can re-enter the compost pile of organic waste, raising the carbon / nitrogen ratio when too low.
Some industries use it to make cellulose paper, while, after a sulfur-based process, the lightened straw is woven and used for the manufacture of hats and bags.
In furniture it is mainly used for the stuffing of chairs.
In the saddlery it was the stuffing of saddles and collars for horses.
Interest in the use of straw as an alternative energy source is growing equally rapidly.
